British Standard Cables

What is a British Standard?
British Standards are documents outlining minimum or maximum constructional requirements, technical specifications and criteria, to be used as guidelines, and to provide definitions. British Standards establish benchmarks for manufacture of goods and services, and can be applied to products and procedures.

British Standards are produced by the BSI Group (British Standards Institute), which also supplies standards-related services.

Although British Standards generally do not impose any regulations, some laws may refer to some of the standards, therefore enforcing them. For instance, BS7671 provides technical and practical guidance for the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, guidance which engineers will rarely risk ignoring.

All British Standards carry the prefix BS.

What are British Standard Cables?
British Standard Cables – also known as BS Cables - are electrical cables manufactured in accordance with and compliant to a specific British Standard. There is an extensive list of cables complying with British Standards.

How can BS Cables be identified?
Electrical cables manufacturers demonstrate they have followed the steps to fulfil British Standards requirements by putting a BS mark on their cables’ sheath.
